1. Immigrant Access to Federally Funded Shelter and housing. Immigrant survivors often face obstacles in accessing federally subsidized housing and services that protect life or safety because of providers’ misunderstandings about immigration requirements for program participants. This 75-minute training will provide an overview of the rights of immigrants to access federally funded housing programs, such as programs funded by HUD and USDA Rural Development. It will include an emphasis on recent HUD authority confirming the rights of VAWA self-petitioners to access public and assisted housing as well as restating and reconfirming the rights of survivors, regardless of their immigration status, to access emergency shelters and transitional housing that receive federal funds.

2. Rental Housing Rights of Domestic and Sexual Survivors
This training will provide an overview of the housing protections for survivors under
the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 (VAWA 2013) as well as
regulations and notices by federal agencies implementing VAWA 2013’s housing
provisions. Topics will include legal protections, advocacy strategies, and practical tips for
protecting survivors under VAWA.

3. Nuisance and Crime-Free Housing ordinances and their impact on Survivors. This training will introduce the issue of nuisance and crime-free housing ordinances
and policies and discuss how these laws and policies negatively impact survivors of
domestic and sexual violence, as well as other populations. The training will also discuss
existing legal protections, including VAWA and fair housing laws, that may apply in
situations where nuisance and crime-free housing policies are being enforced against
survivors. The presenter will also discuss practical tips on how to identify whether
nuisance and/or crime-free housing policies are being enforced in one’s community.
